How to readthe result

Each card shows your text in one font. The text is lit like LED neon, in the colour that you select. Under the preview, each card gives these items:

  • The style group: Single line, Script, Bold or Multi-line. The group tells you how a sign maker bends the tube along the letters.
  • The tube note: the points to examine in this font before you make it in neon.
  • The suggested minimum: the smallest size that we suggest for your text in this font, in centimetres and inches.
  • The neon sign maker line: this line tells you if the free neon sign maker on this site has this font, and the name of the font in the maker.

A large suggested minimum does not mean that a font is bad for neon. It means that the shortest character is short when you compare it with the full text. This character must be large enough for the tube.

Sometimes a card shows a list of characters. The font has no letter for these characters. The preview shows a different font for them, so the card shows no size. Select a different font, or remove these characters.

“Design this sign” opens the free neon sign maker. The link does not copy your text or your font. Type your text again in the neon sign maker and select a font.

How we judge a fontfor neon signs

In our opinion, these points change how a font looks when a sign maker makes it in LED neon. We examine them in each font:

  • Closed spaces in letters such as a, e, g and o. The light from the tube can fill a small closed space.
  • Thin joins between thick strokes. In neon, a thin join has the same width as a thick stroke.
  • Sharp corners. Each corner is a tight bend in the tube.
  • Parallel lines and outlines. Each line is a different tube, so the sign uses more tube.
  • Letters that touch or overlap.

The tube notes are our opinion of the letter shapes. They are not the result of a production test. Speak to your sign maker before you order.

How we calculate the suggested minimum

We use the font measurement rule from our help article Understanding Font Measurements in the Advanced Letter Model. Customisers that use Advanced Letter pricing calculate the size of typed text with this rule.

  1. Find the shortest character in your text. Do not measure these marks: . , - _ ' " ` ~ = + ^ * … ´ and curly quotation marks. Other symbols, such as / and !, are measured.
  2. Make the text larger or smaller until that character is 6 cm (approximately 2.4 in) high. If the text has letters from A to Z and all of them are capital letters, use 10 cm (approximately 3.9 in) instead.
  3. Measure the width and the height of the full text at that size.

In a Store that uses centimetres and Advanced Letter pricing, the Sign Customiser merchant admin starts each new font at 6 cm and 10 cm. Each font in the free neon sign maker has these values. Each sign maker sets their own values for each font. Thus, your sign maker can give you a different minimum. The free neon sign maker has set sizes. Use the suggested minimum as a guide when you select a size.

The tool rounds each value to the nearest 0.5 cm and 0.5 in. It measures the letters with the text measurement of your browser. The customer customiser measures the font outlines when it has the parsed font file. Thus, the two results can be slightly different. The size is for one line of text, without a backboard border.

All 33 fonts are free fonts. 30 fonts use the SIL Open Font License 1.1, and 3 fonts use the Apache License 2.0. The font files are from the Google Fonts repository on GitHub. On 27 October 2026, each font file and licence file was the same as the file in that repository. The list at the end of this page gives the licence for each font.

Worked example:one phrase, two fonts

Type “Good Vibes Only”. The text has capital letters and small letters. Thus, the shortest character is 6 cm high.

  • In Yellowtail, the suggested minimum is approximately 85 × 15 cm (33.5 × 6 in).
  • In Sacramento, the suggested minimum is approximately 149.5 × 31.5 cm (59 × 12.5 in).

Sacramento has very short small letters, such as o, e and s. Its capital letters and its tall letters, such as l, b and d, are much higher. When the short letters are 6 cm high, the tall letters make the sign much larger.

Now type “OPEN”. All the letters are capital letters. Thus, the shortest character is 10 cm high. In Julius Sans One, the suggested minimum is approximately 37 × 10.5 cm (14.5 × 4 in). In Sacramento, it is approximately 51.5 × 10.5 cm (20.5 × 4 in).

We measured these values in Google Chrome on 27 October 2026. A different browser can give slightly different values.

For sign businesses

Neon fontsin your own store

You can give your customers these fonts in your own store with Sign Customiser. Your customers type their text and select a font, a colour and a size. Then they see a preview and a price. You upload your .ttf font files in the merchant admin. If your customiser uses Advanced Letter pricing, you also set the two minimum heights for each font. Read the licence of a font before you add it.

Frequently askedquestions

Which font is good for a neon sign?

A font with an even stroke and open letters is easy to make in neon. Single-line fonts such as Comfortaa and Quicksand are examples. Fonts with thin joins, small closed spaces or many parallel lines must be larger.

Are these neon fonts free?

Yes. 30 fonts use the SIL Open Font License 1.1, and 3 fonts use the Apache License 2.0. Both licences let you use the fonts for commercial work. The list on this page gives the licence for each font.

How tall must the letters on a neon sign be?

In a Store that uses centimetres and Advanced Letter pricing, each new font starts with two minimum heights: 6 cm for the smallest letter and 10 cm for the uppercase letter. The customiser uses the uppercase minimum when the text has at least one letter from A to Z and all of them are capital letters. Your sign maker can use different values.

Why does my text show in a different font?

The font has no letter for some characters in your text. Examples are an emoji or a letter from a different alphabet. Your browser shows a different font for these characters. Select a different font, or remove these characters.

Can I order a sign in a font that is not on this list?

Speak to your sign maker. A sign maker that uses Sign Customiser can upload a .ttf font file to their customiser. Examine the font licence first.
