Customise
How to make Sign Customiser fit into your store theme
- Apply a Light or Tokyo Night theme presetSet the colours on the Colour Scheme page in one step with the Light or Tokyo Night preset, then change single colours.
- Show a different background for each sizeLink each preset size to its own scene background, so the customer customiser shows a different background when the customer changes the size.
- Set a real size for the built-in background and use scenes in product imagesGive the built-in blue/grey background a real width so signs scale against it, and show the customer's chosen background in the cart and order product image.
- Set the Sign area for each background imagePlace a Sign area on a background image so the customer customiser shows the sign in that box.
- Real size viewShow the sign next to a 170 cm person at the same scale.
- Selected colour CSS variablesMirror the colours a shopper picks in the customiser into your own storefront styling using the --sign-selected-colour CSS variables.
- Custom CSSUse css to create your own styles for Sign Customiser
- Vertical text orientationLet customers stack each character on its own line, lock a customiser to one orientation, or set a default orientation for languages that read top to bottom.
- Default text alignmentUse Sign Customiser to control the alignment of the text that shoppers type. You can show the alignment buttons to shoppers. You can also hide the buttons and set one fixed alignment.
- Option Number ListYou can now automatically generate a list of options for your customiser that are numbered. This is useful for when you have a large number of options and you want to make it easier for your customers to understand the order of the options.
- Editor ModesControl the text editor and decide whether supported customisers can accept characters that a selected font cannot draw.
- Theme Colour Reference GuideThis guide shows how to change the colours of your Sign Customiser. You can change the buttons, labels and backgrounds in the admin. You do not need to write CSS code. To change the colours of a customiser: Go to the Sign Customiser admin: Universal accounts: Go to Home in your account. Shopify users: In the Shopify admin, go to Apps and open the app. Select Customisers in the menu. Select the customiser you want to change. In the menu on the left, select Theme Colours. The next paragraph says where it is. Select a colour field. Use the colour picker to set the colour you want. Select Submit to save your changes. The place of Theme Colours depends on the width of the admin content area. This is the area to the right of the navigation. If the admin content area is 1200 px wide or more, the menu has the heading Customiser Menu, and Theme Colours is under Settings. If the admin content area is less than 1200 px wide, the menu has no Customiser Menu heading, and Theme Colours is the last item under Features. If the admin content area is less than 799 px wide, the menu opens from a Menu button. You can also type "Theme Colours" in the Search menu items... box. Reset to Defaults is also on this page. It puts the default colours in the form. Select Submit to save them. Some advanced elements are not in the Theme Colours section. To change these elements, use CSS. This guide shows how to add CSS code correctly: Custom CSS.
- Options sidebar position - desktop onlyDisplay the options sidebar on the left or right, option only available for desktop.
- Custom Design TabChoose when the Custom tab shows on your customiser, and add a link to an external page for custom designs.
- Mobile Style OptionsChoose how the customer customiser shows its options on mobile. Every customiser can use Stacked all at once or One Selection at a Time. These settings apply on tablets and phones. These are screens less than 1025 px wide. Customers on a desktop-width screen do not see them. In the merchant admin, open your customiser and go to Settings > General Settings. Scroll down to Mobile Style Options.
- Centimetres/Inches measurement displayChoose which units shoppers see on your customiser: centimetres, inches, or both
- Font display optionsExcept for lightbox face text, you can show the sidebar font list in two ways. You can show all fonts at once. Or you can show them behind a dropdown button. Lightbox face text always shows all fonts. We recommend the dropdown if you have many fonts. It reduces vertical scroll. The customiser loads each font preview when it comes into view. If you show all fonts, customers can choose a font without opening a list. The first image shows the dropdown. The second image shows the fonts in a grid.
- Price display on first loadSelect how to display the price on the customiser, useful for marketing such as Google products.
- Set the product title and main product imageHow to set the product title and the main product image that the cart and the order use
- Show / Hide Measurements?Choose which measurements show in the visualiser and in the cart.
- Arranging the option orderSort the order of option sections and individual choices in the customiser
- Modal displayShow your customiser in a modal on your storefront theme.
- Scene EditorFormally called background images - how to control the scene that the signs display on.
- Visually scale signs for size dimensionsYou can give the visualiser the appearance of the sign getting bigger or smaller relative to the size the customer has chosen. This setting does not change lightbox signs. Follow these steps to enable this feature: Go to the Sign Customiser admin. Select the customiser that you want to edit. From the left-hand menu, go to Features → Scene Editor - Background Images. Enable Scale visualisation with size. This setting is part of some plans. On a plan that does not include it, the checkbox is not available and the admin asks you to upgrade. To upgrade, go to Your Company → Billing. In the Shopify admin, open the app and select Subscription/Credit in the app menu. The checkbox is also not available while Enable Dragging, Enable Scaling or Enable Rotation is on. These options are on the Drag, Scale, Rotate page in the Features menu. Turn off all three first. Click Save. For signs other than lightbox, the visualiser now grows and shrinks the sign relative to the smallest and largest size.
- Review ScreenYou can choose to let your customers review their custom sign before it is added to the cart. This review screen also displays a summary of the selected options. This guide will show you how to enable this feature and where to customise the text displayed on the review screen.
- Decimal Format for MeasurementsChoose With Decimal or No Decimal for Decimal Format of Measurements in General Settings.
- Change A Font's Line Height / Line SpacingChange the line height of a font to adjust the space between lines of text in a customiser.
Languages and translation
- Languages in Sign CustomiserUse one customiser for multiple shopper languages, manage each translation as a draft, and publish the right version across Shopify and Universal.
- Add, translate, preview and publish a languageAdd a shopper language, translate it manually or with an AI-assisted first draft, preview it privately, and publish it when it is ready.
- Choose the customiser language on Shopify and UniversalSet up one multilingual customiser and control how Shopify and Universal choose a published shopper language.
- Translate option names, colours, fonts and sizesEdit source option wording on its own page, then translate the shopper-visible value without changing pricing or production data.
- Translate custom formsTranslate custom form fields, choices, guidance and submission messages while leaving shopper answers unchanged.
- Translate the review screenTranslate the final design review, its actions, selected-option headings and supporting information.
- Translate cart and order detailsUnderstand which translated labels reach products, carts, orders and fulfilment, and why later edits do not rewrite old orders.
- Use right-to-left languagesEnable right-to-left layout separately from translation on Shopify and Universal, then test the live integration and font coverage.
Integrations
Platform based integration guides
- Integration GuidesFind the right way to connect Sign Customiser to your website or store — whether you're on Shopify, WordPress, Wix, or building something custom.
- Customiser LinksShare a customiser as a standalone link, hosted on signcustomiser.com — no website required.
- Find your Sign Customiser IDLog in to the Sign Customiser admin for your store. Click Customisers. You'll see a list of your customisers, each with its customiser ID shown alongside. Make a note of the ID you need.
- Subscribe to WebhooksHow to Subscribe to Webhooks in Sign Customiser Webhooks let your application receive a notification when an event occurs in Sign Customiser. This guide shows how to set up a webhook subscription. It also shows how to verify the webhook signature. Note: The form:submitted webhook was deprecated on 24 August 2026. It continues to send data for every submission, with the same payload. No removal date is scheduled. For a new integration, read submissions from the quotes API. It also returns your submission history. It needs an API key with the quotes:read scope.
- Zapier IntegrationThis Sign Customiser guide covers Zapier Integration with the steps and context you need to complete the workflow.
Shopify Theme Integration
- Choose how to install Sign Customiser on ShopifyFind the correct setup guide for a Shopify theme, custom Liquid template, page builder, or headless storefront.
- Use the iframe option in the Shopify app blockTurn the experimental iframe embed on or off for the Sign Customiser app block. Use it when your theme's CSS or JavaScript interferes with the direct embed.
- Install Sign Customiser on a headless Shopify storefrontConnect Sign Customiser to a Storefront API or Hydrogen cart outside a Shopify Online Store theme.
- Install Sign Customiser in a Shopify theme with an app blockUse the Shopify theme editor to add Sign Customiser to a compatible product or page template with an app block.
- Install Sign Customiser in a Shopify theme without app blocksUse this guide when a Shopify Online Store theme serves the page, but the Liquid template cannot accept a Sign Customiser app block.
- Enable sticky add to cart button on your customiser.Use these settings to keep the visualiser in view when the shopper scrolls. See this example page. On mobile, you can also keep the price box and its button fixed. Fixed is sometimes called sticky. Before you start. Sticky Visualiser is a setting in the Shopify theme editor. It is in the Sign Customiser block and in the Sign Customiser - Embed block. It does not work when Use iframe (experimental) is on. See Use the iframe option in the Shopify app block. The Liquid iframe wrapper code has no theme editor setting for Sticky Visualiser.
- Adding CSS to Shopify themes - Alternative (but Not Recommended) MethodAlthough editing your Shopify theme is an alternative method for applying CSS, it is no longer the recommended approach. This method allows you to keep your styles within your theme, but it may require reapplication after theme updates. For the recommended approach to adding custom CSS, please refer to the guide: How to Add Custom CSS the Right Way.
- Set up Shopify variant links so the customiser opens on the right sizeThis guide explains how to link Shopify product variants to Sign Customiser sizes so the correct size is selected when a shopper opens a product page.
- Open the correct size from a Shopify variant linkUse a Shopify product link with?variant= to open the customiser with the matching size already selected.
Wordpress / Woocommerce Theme & Store Integration
- Connecting WooCommerce with Sign CustomiserIntegrate your WooCommerce store with Sign Customiser
- Automatically Deleting Generated Products in WordPressWhen a customer adds a design to the cart, Sign Customiser creates a product for that design. A customiser in Quote Mode does not create a product. Customers use these products to buy their designs. These products can fill your product list. Sign Customiser creates the products in your WooCommerce store through the connection that you set up. Each product has the SignCustomiser product tag. To set up the connection, read Connecting WooCommerce with Sign Customiser. This guide shows how to delete these products automatically. Use the WP Bulk Delete Pro plugin. WP Bulk Delete is a third-party plugin published by Xylus Themes. Use it with caution and at your own risk.
- How SEO is treated for Custom Signs in WordPressSign Customiser creates a WooCommerce product for each custom sign that a customer adds to the cart. The app hides these products from your shop listings. The product page gets a "noindex" tag only while the legacy WordPress plugin is installed and active.
Custom & Other Platform Integrations
- Embed the customiser on any websiteAdd the customiser to your website with an iframe, and learn when to use Quote Mode, a Customiser Link or a connected platform to take orders.
- Custom API IntegrationLearn how to connect your custom ecommerce store with Sign Customiser using webhooks, product creation, and order processing APIs
- Webflow IntegrationTip: The customiser embeds the same way on Webflow as on any website. For sizing, display options, and how to take orders, see Embed the customiser on any website. The steps below cover the Webflow-specific parts.
- Wix IntegrationThis Sign Customiser guide covers Wix Integration with the steps and context you need to complete the workflow.
- Squarespace IntegrationTip: The customiser embeds the same way on Squarespace as on any website. For sizing, display options, and how to take orders, see Embed the customiser on any website. The steps below cover the Squarespace-specific parts.
- Iframe Embed: How to Handle "Add to Cart" ActionsThis guide shows how to connect Sign Customiser to the "Add to Cart" function on your own website. Your website must let you add an iframe and custom JavaScript. It is for the plain <iframe> embed. In this embed, you put an <iframe> tag on your page and you do not set up an integration. For a Universal customiser, this embed sends the onProductCreated message. Get the iframe code from Embed the customiser on any website. Do you use a Custom API integration with the <sign-customiser-embed> code? That embed sends a different event, sc:product:created. Use Custom API Integration instead. Example: the Finish button below the price in the customiser, when the customiser frame is 1025 px wide or more. The customer clicks the button below the price when the customiser frame is 1025 px wide or more. With Quote Mode off and no enabled Etsy integration, the button label depends on the customiser. If the customiser has a review screen, the button shows Finish. Finish opens the review screen. On the review screen, the customer clicks Add to Bag. If the customiser has no review screen, the button shows Add to Bag at once. A customiser can use its own button labels. With Quote Mode on, or with an enabled Etsy integration, the button has a different label and the customiser does not send the message in this guide. When the customer clicks Add to Bag, the customiser creates the product and sends a message to your page. Your page must add the product to its own cart. Your page must then send the result to the customiser.
- Export your quote requests with the APIRead your quote requests and custom design submissions, including past ones, into a CRM or spreadsheet with the Sign Customiser API and a Read quotes key.
- Update customiser pricing with the APIRead, replace and patch the pricing of a customiser with the Sign Customiser API, using a key with Read pricing or Write pricing access.

- The confirmation email your customer receivesYou can send an email to your customer when they submit a quote request or a custom design form. This email is the Customer Confirmation Email. It is the only email under Email Workflows that goes to your customer. It is switched off by default Sign Customiser sends no acknowledgement when a customer submits a quote request or a custom design form until you turn it on. If you never opened this page, your customers receive no acknowledgement.
- Braille SignsCreate a braille sign customiser, choose the braille table and dot colour, handle wording that cannot be translated, and see what braille data reaches orders and production files.
- Braille translation: supported languages and sizingWhich languages and grades braille translation supports, the default braille table for each store currency, why braille dots never scale with the sign, and what happens when translation is unavailable.
- Cart and checkout behaviourSign Customiser has three behaviours that can occur after a customer adds a product to the cart. This setting is only for Stores that sell through Shopify. Wix sets the cart behaviour in its own integration. For more information about the Wix integration, read Wix Integration. Straight to Cart Page The customer goes to the cart page. Straight to Checkout The customer goes to the checkout page. Cart Window or Custom integration Use this option when you want your mini-cart or slide-out cart to open after the customer adds the product. In default mode (when Use iframe (experimental) is off), the Sign Customiser theme block tries to open the cart drawer on Shopify Horizon. On other themes, the cart can stay closed. If your cart does not open, add the JavaScript event listener in the next section. The listener sends added:ajaxProduct, which opens the cart only if your theme listens for that event.
- Sign Components OverviewOverview of Sign Components — the building blocks that define the visual and structural makeup of your signs
- Share Custom Sign DesignsGenerate unique urls of a sign design that can be shared across the web
- Auto-Save Customer selectionsWhen you turn on Save sign design for next visit, customers can leave your website and return later with their previous selections automatically pre-loaded in the customiser. This setting is off until you turn it on. Customers continue where they left off and do not have to redo their design. The undo history is also kept when they return. The customiser saves the design in the browser of the customer, on the device that the customer uses. Each customiser keeps its own saved design. The saved design does not show in these cases: The customer returns on a different device. The customer clears the browser storage. To let a customer open a design on a different device, use sharing. Sharing works only if your plan includes sharing and your store has an active subscription or a trial with a payment method. Then set Share Sign Location to any option except Disabled. The customer then uses the share button when the design has text. The Share Sign Location dropdown sets the position of the share button.
- Upload background imagesAllow your customers to supply their own images for the background of the sign visualiser.
- Currency conversionConvert all prices in a customiser by a currency rate.
- Drag, Scale, Rotate Words and IconsLet your customers drag, scale and rotate the words and shapes in their design. Your customers can then place each word where they want it. This feature gives your customers these abilities: Independent word sizing: Change the size of each word separately. Independent word layout: Drag each word to a new position. A word does not have to stay on its own line. Word layer priority: Make words overlap. Your customer selects a word. Then your customer clicks the Move layer up or Move layer down button to move the word one layer in front of or behind the word next to it. Snap to grid: Keep words in line. When Snap to Grid is on, an item snaps to a grid when your customer drags or transforms it. This feature is available on current plans. It is not available on legacy plans. A Universal Store can set these options and preview the customiser without a subscription. A Shopify Store or a Wix Store needs an active subscription on a current plan to set these options. A Universal Store can go live only with an active subscription, or with a trial that has a payment method on file. A Shopify Store or a Wix Store can go live with only an active subscription.
- Google FontsUse the Google font picker to add a font from the Google font library to your customiser. You do not need a font file.
- Icons in Sign DesignsUse the Icons feature to upload SVG graphics. Customers can add these icons to their sign designs. Customers use the icons together with text to make personalised signs. This guide explains how to upload icons and where customers find them. Note: Lightbox customisers do not have an Icons menu item.
- Multi-colour / Multi-font sign designsMulti-colour and multi-font signs let customers use more than one colour or font in the same sign. Most sign types support this feature. The admin menu does not show the setting for Lightbox, Metal Cut-Out and Stencil customisers.
- Multi-CurrencyMulti-currency lets customers see prices in their preferred currency. You can set it up with a currency switcher app or with Shopify Markets. We recommend Shopify Markets. To accept payments in multiple currencies, Shopify Markets needs Shopify Payments or Adyen. On 8 November 2023, Sign Customiser announced support for two currency apps. They are Vitals and Beast Currency Converter. The announcement called the second app Best Currency Converter. This guide shows how to set up Markets or one of the apps. It also shows how to choose how the customiser shows the currency.
- Quote ModeQuote Mode replaces add to cart with a quote form. The customer designs the sign and sees the live preview. Then the customer sends the design to your team for review. The customer does not pay at this time. By default, the customer does not see the price. To show the suggested price to the customer, turn on Show suggested price. Sign Customiser saves each request under Quotes in your admin. To see the full details, select the blue quote number and form name. The quote details page has a Download Quote button. This button saves the quote as a PDF. The designated inbox also receives these items: the form answers of the customer the selected sign options the preview images The inbox receives the suggested price only when Show suggested price is on. The email also includes a download link to an SVG file when SVG generation is on and the design supports it. When Send a confirmation email to my customer is turned on, the customer also gets an email after the customer submits a quote. To set up this email, go to Email Workflows → Customer Confirmation Email in the customiser. Quote Mode stops at the quote request. It does not create a paid order. It does not send the manufacturer order email. Your team reviews the request and confirms the final price. Then your team invoices the customer through your usual process. Use Quote Mode when customers do the first design themselves, but a person must check some details before you accept the order. These details can be feasibility, shipping, installation or a bespoke production detail.
- Sign PresetsSign Presets allows you to save any customiser configuration as a reusable starting design. This makes it easy to showcase popular designs, promote designs, or provide ready-made options that can be customised further. This guide will show you how to create a preset and display it on your website.
Lightbox
- Customer uploaded images for lightboxesLet customers upload images on the individual sides of the lightbox.
- Lightbox mounting optionsShow a 3D visual of your lightbox's mounting hardware — Single Prong, Double Prong, Pedestal, or Sign Feet — in the customiser and product images.
- Lightbox TypesSet up Lightbox Types: choose a shape, switch parts on or off, add materials, and set Recessed Borders and pricing.
Channel Letters
- Letter PartsConfigure letter parts (Face / Front Lit, Side, Trim, Back Lit) with colours, materials, and pricing for channel letter types
- Letter TypesLetter types are groups of letter parts for channel-letter customisers. Use letter types to create unique sign designs. An example is 3D illuminated letters. You can add more than one letter type to a customiser. If there is more than one letter type, customers see the Choose a letter type step by default. Then they choose a colour or texture for each active letter part. For more information about letter parts, read the Letter Parts article. Lightbox customisers and Braille customisers use the same feature with different names: Lightbox customisers: go to Sign Components → Lightbox Types. Read Lightbox Types. Braille customisers: go to Sign Components → Tactile text styles. Read Braille Signs.
- Front-lit and back-lit channel lettersYou can create channel letter signs. The customer can choose front-lit and back-lit colours for these signs.
Neon
- Flow RGB colour optionThe Flow option lets a neon tube show more than one colour at the same time. The colours blend into each other and move along the sign. In Tube Colours, Flow is only for neon tube colours. The picture below shows a neon sign with several colours.
- RGB colour optionThe RGB colour option shows several colours in the live preview. The colours cycle through the sign. Customers see the effect before they buy. You can add this option to neon signs and to channel letter signs.
- Jackets and tubes for neon signsGive your customers the ability to select how the jackets/tubes are presented for your neon signs.
- Letter glow effectsThis article shows how to change the glow effect of the letters on your neon sign. It also shows how to let shoppers turn the glow on and off. There are two glow effects: White tube and Coloured Glow Coloured tube and Coloured Glow
Backboards
- BackboardsBackboards control the shape, colour, material and texture of the panel behind your sign. For some backboard types, customers can upload their own image. This guide shows how to: Configure the Backboard section Add different backboard types Add backboard colours and materials Allow customers to upload their own backboard images
- Customer designed Backboard ImagesThis guide shows how to let your customers upload their own images for backboards.
- Backboard shapes: Why Are "Fill" Attributes Important for Your SVG Files?Use "fill" attributes in the SVG files you add to the customiser. Do not use "stroke" attributes. This guide explains why. It also shows what happens to icons and custom backboard shapes when an SVG file uses strokes, and how to correct the file.
Mountings
- MountingsAdd mounting options for your signs. Set optional prices and colours.
- Restrict mounting optionsYou can stop customers from finishing a sign with a mounting that does not fit their colour or backboard. When a customer chooses an excluded mounting, a message tells them that the mounting is not available. The customer cannot finish the sign until the mounting fits both the colour and the backboard. To do this, the customer chooses a different mounting, or changes the colour or backboard that the mounting excludes. Do these steps: Open the Sign Customiser admin for your Store. Click Customisers. Click the customiser that you want to change. In the Customiser Menu, go to Sign Components → Mountings. Click Add Mounting, or click an existing mounting. In the Exclusions section, select the incompatible colours in Colour Exclusions. Select the incompatible backboards in Backboard Exclusions. Click Save. Lightbox customisers do not show the exclusion fields. For Lightbox mountings, read Lightbox mounting options.
Discounts
- Create Shopify discounts for custom sign productsFor most Shopify stores, scope an Amount off products discount to Sign Customiser Products or to a collection named after one of your customisers. Sign Customiser adds each new sign to the right collections during product creation, so eligible automatic discounts and discount codes work on the shopper's first attempt. Use the collections managed by Sign Customiser Do not build a smart collection from product type or tag rules for discount targeting. Shopify indexes those rules later, after the shopper may already have reached the cart or checkout.
- Shopify discounts vs built-in price discountsCompare Shopify discounts with Sign Customiser's built-in price discount. Learn where each discount appears and how to use both.
AI Sign Designer
AI sign designer and working with forms for custom designs
- AI Sign Designer GuideThe AI Sign Designer converts a customer image into a vector SVG outline for sign production. Customers upload a PNG, JPEG, WebP, SVG, or PDF. The AI makes a clean SVG file. Customers use this file immediately to configure and buy a sign. This is different from a custom design form submission. With AI Sign Designer, customers get a result that they can buy after processing. Processing can take a few minutes. Without it, or when credits run out and you have set a fallback form, customers send a request. You process this request manually later. Finding AI Sign Designer in the admin Open Customisers. Select your customiser. In the customiser menu, select Custom Designs. This item has an "AI Designer" badge. On a narrow screen, select Menu first. To test an upload yourself, open Manage > AI Design Files on Universal. On Shopify, open AI Design Files from the app menu. Use the AI Converter card. The customiser Overview page shows a promo card for eligible customisers. The card reads "AI Sign Designer - Turn any image into production-ready signs".
- Set up the AI Sign Designer build screen and fallback formChange the text customers see while AI Sign Designer builds a design, and send refused or failed designs to your fallback form.
- Set up AI Sign Designer on a Material Length customiserSet up AI Sign Designer on a Material Length (Advanced Letter) customiser: choose the pricing, set the default size and minimum height, and pick a fallback form.

- Accept and show customer uploads on custom design formsAdd a File Upload field to a custom design form, see which file types and sizes it accepts, and learn how shoppers' files show on the customiser stage.
- Linking to an External Page for Custom DesignsYou can add a link to an external page. Use the link instead of a custom form in the customiser. With the Link Only display, the link is at the top of the selections column.
- How to Enable AI Sign DesignerEnable AI Sign Designer on an existing customiser, configure its fallback form and pricing, then test the customer experience.
Custom Design Screen
- Change the instructions on the Custom Design screenChange the main heading and step text shown beside a form on the customer-facing Custom tab, and find the right settings when you are currently editing the form itself.
- Set the Custom Design Form as the Initial ScreenYou can show a Custom Design Form as the initial screen of your customiser. The form then replaces the default sign visualiser.
Forms
- Custom Design FormsA Custom Design Form is a contact form built into Sign Customiser. Use it to collect custom design requests that the app cannot generate automatically. The form appears in the customiser: On desktop, it opens from the Custom tab. This is the default tab name. You can rename it. On mobile, it appears as a link below the selections. Customers can upload files, write messages, and use dropdowns, checkboxes and multiple-choice fields. They do not leave the page while they fill in the form. After they submit, they stay on the page unless you choose Redirect to a page (see Step 4). To quote customiser designs, use Quote Mode instead. For more information, read Quote Mode.
- Add and Edit Custom Form Field OptionsThis guide shows how to add and edit the fields in a custom form. Every form must have a required Email field. New forms include this field.

- Use product types to group generated sign products in ShopifySee which Shopify product type Sign Customiser gives each generated sign product, and how to use it for collections, shipping rules and automations.
- How to Disable VAT/Tax on ProductsCustom sign products have tax enabled by default. Shopify applies the tax rules that you set up in Shopify. In the European Union, this tax is called VAT. To disable tax for your custom sign products, do these steps. Note: The Tax option is only for Stores that are connected to Shopify. It shows in the Shopify admin and in the Sign Customiser admin. Sign Customiser sets the tax setting on the Shopify product that it creates for each custom sign. Stores on other platforms do not show the option. Open the customiser that you want to change. In the menu, click General Settings. Scroll down to the Product section on the General Settings page. Do not use the Product item in the menu. Under Tax, select Don't charge tax on this product. Click Save. The new setting applies to custom sign products that Sign Customiser creates after you save. Products that exist already keep their old tax setting. To set a discount, click Discounts in the menu.
Order Management
- Order fulfilment for in-house and outsourced productionSign Customiser supports sign businesses that manufacture in-house, outsource production or use a mix of both. It captures the customer's design. It then passes the same specifications into the order and production handoff. Sign Customiser does not manufacture or ship the sign. You keep control of feasibility checks, supplier costs, approvals, production, delivery and installation.
- Export orders as CSV via emailExport your Sign Customiser orders as a CSV file. You get an email with a private download link. Choose a preset or custom date range.
- Supplier / Manufacturer EmailsYes. You can use Sign Customiser when another company makes your signs. When an order is created from your store, Sign Customiser can send the order email automatically. It sends the email to the Receiver Email address set for that customiser. The supplier receives an ordinary email. The supplier does not need a Sign Customiser account. You keep control of the customer, the supplier relationship, the approval process and the delivery.
- SVG, EPS and .AI files for manufacturing workflowsSign Customiser can make an SVG file of the sign design. CNC machines can use this file. It also helps you trace the letters of the sign. This setting is off by default. To turn it on, follow these steps. Go to Settings → General Settings in your customiser. In the Generate SVG image of sign section, set SVG Image to Yes. Save your changes. For Simple Letter customisers, the app checks your fonts first. If a font cannot make an SVG, the app lists those fonts and keeps SVG Image at No. Change the fonts, then do steps 2 and 3 again. When SVG generation is on, the Shopify order shows the SVG file as the _svg line item property. The manufacturer email also has a link to the SVG file for each order that has one. You can also make EPS and Illustrator-compatible PDF files for the same design. The Illustrator-compatible PDF has an.ai filename. To turn them on, set EPS Image or AI Image to Yes. Each of these settings also keeps SVG generation on. The Shopify order does not include the EPS file or the AI file. They reach your manufacturer in the manufacturer email. The default manufacturer email template has a link for each file type. A link shows only when that file exists. If you changed the template, make sure that it has the epsPreviewLink and aiPreviewLink variables. Stencil customisers also have a DXF (.dxf) option in the same section. The admin describes it as an "AutoCAD-compatible outline file for CNC, laser, and plasma cutters". It needs SVG generation, so this setting also keeps SVG generation on. The manufacturer email has the DXF link in the dxfPreviewLink variable. The Shopify order does not include the DXF file. Lightbox customisers do not show the Generate SVG image of sign section. Cut-out metal signs use the same files. The SVG has the cut-path geometry for the metal panel. The EPS file and the Illustrator-compatible PDF file come from the SVG in the same way. Cut-out workflows need no new file types or template variables. All current plans include this feature: Seed, Growth and Ultimate. The older Pro, Boost and Premier plans also include it. The older Starter, Standard and Launch plans do not include it. On those plans, the Generate SVG image of sign settings show Plan Upgrade Required. For detailed instructions on how to use these files in your manufacturing process, read these guides. How to enable/disable SVG, EPS, and Illustrator-compatible PDF files for manufacturing How to find the SVG, EPS,.AI file in the Shopify How to include SVG, EPS, and Illustrator-compatible PDF files in manufacturer emails
- Update manufacturer email addressYou can send manufacturer order emails to more than one address. Put a comma between the addresses, for example first@email.com,second@email.com. To change the manufacturer email address: Open Sign Customiser. In Shopify, open the app from your Shopify admin. In the Universal admin (web.signcustomiser.com), you are already there. Click Customisers. Click the customiser you want to change. If the admin area is narrower than 799 px, click Menu first. Find Email Workflows in the menu. If the admin area is 1200 px wide or more, expand Email Workflows in the Customiser Menu first. Then click Manufacturer Email. Type the address in Receiver Email. Click Save. The button is at the bottom right of the form. Good to know: The new address applies to order emails that the app sends after you save. To send an earlier order to the new address, open Orders. In the Actions column, open the menu for that order and choose Resend manufacturer email. This option is not available for every order. The address applies to this customiser only. Do these steps again for each customiser that needs it. If you leave Receiver Email blank, the app uses the email of the manufacturer assigned to this customiser, if there is one. If there is none, it uses the store's email (for a Universal store that is not linked to Shopify, the Store owner's email). If the page shows PRO plan required, your plan does not include this setting. To check your plan, go to Your Company → Billing. In Shopify, go to Subscription/Credit.
- How to include SVG, EPS, and Illustrator-compatible PDF files in manufacturer emailsAdd SVG, EPS, AI and DXF download links to the manufacturer email template.
- How to enable/disable SVG, EPS, and Illustrator-compatible PDF files for manufacturingUse these steps to turn SVG, EPS, and AI files on or off for manufacturing. Open the Sign Customiser admin. Click Customisers. Click the customiser that you want to change. In the left-hand menu, go to Settings → General Settings. Scroll down to the Generate SVG image of sign section. This section has three options: SVG Image — the scalable vector file for CNC machines and letter tracing. EPS Image — an EPS file that our server converts from the generated SVG. AI Image — a PDF file saved with an.ai filename. Stencil customisers have a fourth option, DXF (.dxf). This is an outline file in AutoCAD R12 DXF format. Lightbox customisers do not show this section. To turn on a file type for this customiser, set it to Yes. To turn it off, set it to No. Click Save at the bottom of the form.
- How to find the SVG, EPS and AI files for a Shopify orderWhen a shopper orders a sign, open the order in the Shopify admin. The _svg line item property for the sign holds a link to the SVG file. Use the link to download the file. To get the SVG file, first turn on SVG files for manufacturing. To find the setting, open the customiser, then go to Settings → General Settings. The setting is in the Generate SVG image of sign section. Some signs that need a manufacturer plate have an SVG file even when this setting is off.
Shopify Product Management
- Hide Custom Sign Products from Your StorefrontEach time a customer adds a custom sign to the cart, our app creates the sign as a "product" in your Shopify admin. Shopify needs this product to handle and sell the sign. You can hide these customised products from the pages where customers browse your store. There are two ways to hide them. Use only one of them. Option 1 (recommended): Unlist your custom sign products. One setting in Sign Customiser hides each new custom sign from collection pages, search results and product recommendations in Shopify. A third-party search or recommendation app that does not support the Unlisted status can still show these products, so check any such app. Option 2: Keep the products "Active" and hide them with your Shopify storefront settings. This option has several steps in Shopify.
- Automatically deleting generated productsDelete unpurchased Custom Neon products automatically with the Mechanic app. Use Test mode first, then switch to Live mode.
- Retrieve generated sign products not purchasedSign Customiser adds the sign-customiser-generated tag to each product that it generates after the release at 10:46 UTC on 3 August 2026. After Sign Customiser records a Shopify order for a product, it adds the npc_ordered tag to that product in Shopify. Use both tags in the Shopify product search to find generated products that do not have the npc_ordered tag. Log in to your Shopify admin and open Products. Click the Search and filter field. Enter tag:sign-customiser-generated AND NOT tag:npc_ordered. Shopify shows the generated sign products that do not have the npc_ordered tag. Filter one customiser Products generated after the release at 18:13 UTC on 3 August 2026 also have a tag that is sc-customiser- and the Customiser ID. For example, to see only the products from customiser 9025, add AND tag:sc-customiser-9025 to the search. The full search is tag:sign-customiser-generated AND tag:sc-customiser-9025 AND NOT tag:npc_ordered. Find the ID in the Customiser ID column on the Customisers page in Sign Customiser. You can also open the managed collection that has the name of the customiser. These limits apply: Sign Customiser does not create this collection on Shopify Starter or Retail stores. If the customiser has no name, the collection title is Customiser followed by the ID, for example Customiser 9025. The collection also shows purchased products. The npc_ordered tag does not remove a product from the collection. To leave out purchased products, use the full search in the Search and filter field on the Shopify admin Products page.
- How your products are createdSign Customiser makes a product each time a customer designs a sign and adds it to the cart.
- How SEO is treated for Custom Signs in ShopifyThe custom signs created by our app are automatically hidden from search engines. We apply standard Shopify properties to ensure these products are excluded from SEO indexing. These includes settings recommended in the following guide: Create A Hidden Product in Shopify. These settings are applied automatically when a product is created by our app, and no additional action is required on your end.
- Change Shopify Sale Channel for ProductsUse the Publication field in your Shopify integration. It sets the publication for new sign products. The sign customiser publishes each new product to this publication. The setting applies only to products that the sign customiser creates after you click Update. Products that already exist keep their current publication. This change does not move them. In Shopify Admin, open the Sign Customiser app. On the Home page, in the Menu card, click Tools & Settings. Click Integrations and Webhooks. On the Shopify card, click View Details. In the top right corner, click Edit Integration. In the Publication field, select a publication. If you select Default (Online Store), the sign customiser publishes new products to the Online Store publication. Click Update.
- Autogenerate SKU for sign products in Shopify? Our app creates a new product in Shopify for each custom sign that a customer adds to the cart. The app does not assign SKUs. You can use a third-party app to assign them automatically. This article shows you how.
- Free Shipping for Custom Products in ShopifyYou can give free shipping to the sign products that our app generates. Shopify's default settings make this difficult. Our app creates a new product when a shopper adds a design to the cart. You therefore cannot add that product to a Shopify shipping profile in advance, because the app creates it only when a shopper adds a design to the cart. Shopify adds every new product to your general shipping profile. How to identify generated sign products Use the Sign Customiser Products collection or the sign-customiser-generated tag. To select one customiser, use its collection or the tag sc-customiser- followed by the Customiser ID. For example, a customiser with Customiser ID 9025 has the tag sc-customiser-9025. You can find the Customiser ID in the customisers list in the merchant admin. Use the product type only if you have no other choice. Neon signs have the type Custom Neon. Other categories use these types: Custom Acrylic Sign, Custom Metal Sign, Custom Cut-out Metal Sign, Custom Stencil, Custom Wooden Sign, Custom Aluminium Sign, Custom Braille Sign, Custom Wood Frame Sign and Custom Lightbox. Shopify Starter and Retail plans: Sign Customiser does not create collections on these plans. Generated products still receive both tags. Use a tag condition.

Pricing and Sizing Models
Learn all about our unique models that power the pricing and sizing measurements designed for letter signs and every other sign type.
- Pricing and Sizing - Model OverviewOverview of the three pricing models in Sign Customiser: the Simple Letter Model, the Advanced Letter Model, and the Frame Fit Model.
- Charge for a backboard by the sign areaSet a rate per square inch or square centimetre on a backboard so the charge grows with the size of the sign.
- Set a different price for each letter positionSet a different price for each letter position in Simple Letter and Advanced Letter customisers, with free early letters and a final price for longer text.
- Automatic and manual width for Advanced signsLearn how width follows the text on Advanced Letter customisers, how customers set a manual width, and how the padlock returns the sign to automatic width.
- Choose how multi-line sign height is measuredChoose whether a Fixed Height size measures each line or the letters, and see how the space between lines changes the total height of a multi-line sign.
Simple Letter Model
- Getting Started with the Simple Letter ModelThe Simple Letter pricing model is for merchants who sell signs in standard widths or heights with simple pricing (for example 40 cm, 60 cm and 80 cm). You set prices by size, character count, and number of lines. If you need more flexible pricing and dynamic size scaling, see the Advanced Letter pricing model.
- Sizes – Simple LetterSizes in Simple Letter use a size strategy: fixed width or fixed height. Each size also has a maximum characters per line and a maximum number of lines.
- Pricing - Simple Letter ModelThis Sign Customiser guide covers Pricing - Simple Letter Model with the steps and context you need to complete the workflow.
- Fonts - Simple ModelBefore configuring fonts, make sure you have already set up your Pricing and Sizes sections. Fonts in the Simple Letter Model rely on these settings to accurately calculate sign dimensions and pricing.
- Request Essential Information – Simple Letter ModelThis guide explains how to collect the information you need from your manufacturer to set up the Simple Letter Model customiser.
Advanced Letter Model
- Getting Started with the Advanced ModelThe Advanced Letter Model is for merchants who need flexible pricing and scalable sign dimensions. The Simple Letter Model uses predefined sizes. The Advanced Letter Model calculates the dimensions and the price from the selected font, text, and size. This guide shows the main steps to build an Advanced Letter Model customiser. First, collect information from your supplier. Then set up Pricing, Sizes and Fonts.
- Sizing - Advanced modelThis guide explains how to configure Sizes for the Advanced Letter model. Each size has a Size Scale Multiplier. The multiplier scales the sign by a fixed factor from its base size. The base size comes from the font's minimum letter heights.
- Pricing - Advanced letter modelPricing in the Advanced Letter Model lets you combine several calculations into a price that matches your real production costs. When you choose Letter Material Cost, this model works out the cost from the material length each letter needs. The system measures the outline of every character, takes half of that length as an estimate of its midline (centreline) path, and multiplies it by your material rate. This guide shows how to set up Pricing for the Advanced Letter Model. Works with AI Sign Designer The Advanced Letter Model supports AI Sign Designer for neon signs and channel letter signs (Acrylic and Metal). The system measures an AI-generated SVG design in the same way as typed text. It measures every shape in the converted SVG, except a UV-printed face. For each shape, it takes half of the outline length as an estimate of the midline (centreline) path. A UV-printed face adds no material length, letter price or shipping. The system prices the measured length with your Letter Material Cost. To enable AI Sign Designer on an Advanced Letter customiser, see How to Enable AI Sign Designer.
- Fonts - Advanced ModelThis guide explains how to configure fonts for the Advanced Letter Model, assign pricing models, adjust font spacing, and test measurement accuracy.
- Letter Material CostLetter Material Cost is a pricing method used in the Advanced Letter Model. It calculates the price of letters from the calculated length of each letter's path. Key Benefits: Path-length pricing: Charge based on the calculated path length of each letter. Font-sensitive pricing: Fonts with longer letter outlines cost more. Flexible pricing tiers: Set different material costs for different sign dimensions. Real-time calculations: Prices update as customers change their text or fonts. AI Sign Designer compatible: The same length and rate calculation works for AI-generated SVG designs.
- Understanding Font Measurements in the Advanced Letter ModelThis guide explains how and what you need to consider when setting the minimum font size in the Advanced Letter model.
- Manually calculate shipping cost valueCalculate the shipping cost per square centimetre from your shipping cost matrix, for Advanced Letter and Frame Fit pricing.
- Determine Material Cost from Average Cost per LetterYour supplier gives you an average cost per letter. It is not a material cost for each centimetre or inch. You can still use the Advanced Letter model. This guide shows how to calculate a Letter Material Cost from the average.
- Request essential information - Advanced modelThis guide explains how to collect the information required from your manufacturer to configure the Advanced Letter Model customiser.
- Get your shipping cost matrixThis Sign Customiser guide covers Get your shipping cost matrix with the steps and context you need to complete the workflow.
- Test Sign Measurement AccuracyUse this guide to test how accurate the measurements of a font are. Make a sample SVG of any text in any font. Measure the width, height and material length in Adobe Illustrator. Then compare these values with the customiser.
Frame Fit Model
- Sizing - Frame Fit ModelFrame Fit prices a sign by its width and height. On a lightbox sign with volumetric (parcel) shipping, the depth also sets the price, unless you select Add weight to product instead of calculating price. Then the width, the height and the depth set the product weight. If your store uses weight-based shipping rates in Shopify, those rates use that weight. This option shows on Shopify stores. The image below shows the width and the height of a sign. Metal cut-out signs also use Frame Fit sizing. You can design a metal cut-out sign with the AI sign designer. Then the bounding box of the design sets the proportions of the sign. The sign scales to fit inside the size that the customer chooses or types.
- Pricing - Frame Fit modelFrame Fit prices a sign from its width and height. With a Volumetric parcel, the shipping charge also uses the depth and the packaging allowances. Frame Fit adds no charge for each letter. A Frame Fit pricing is not tied to a font. A Frame Fit customiser uses one pricing. Cut-out metal signs also use Frame Fit pricing. The width and height of the sign control the calculation. Lightbox, Braille, Aluminium Plate and Wood Frame customisers also use Frame Fit. For Neon Letter, Channel Letter and Wood Letter signs, you choose Frame Fit when you create a customiser. On the How do you price your signs? step, select Price per square meter/foot. For Metal Cut-Out, Lightbox, Aluminium Plate, Braille and Wood Frame signs, Frame Fit is set for you. The step does not show.
- Frame Fit ModelFrame Fit lets customers choose a sign width and height. For a Lightbox, customers also choose a depth. A size boundary sets the sign's base price. You can add component and mounting charges. A separate parcel calculation can add a shipping charge. It can also send weight to Shopify.
Fixed Height Model (Legacy)
- Legacy: Fixed Height model (migrate to Simple Letter)Important: The Fixed Height model is no longer available. You cannot choose the Fixed Height model when you create a customiser. Use the Simple Letter model. Set Size Strategy to Fixed Height - Width scales dynamically, and set Multi-line height measurement to Letter height. Enter the same height you used for the Fixed Height size, and the sign has the same size. Prices can differ between the two models, so check your prices after you migrate. If you have a Fixed Height customiser, the Customisers list shows a Migrate badge on it. The customiser page shows Action required: migrate this customiser to the Simple Letter model. Create the customiser again with the Simple Letter model. Do not duplicate it, because a copy of a Fixed Height customiser is also a Fixed Height customiser. For the steps, read Sizes – Simple Letter Model. A fixed height model is a collection of sizes. Each size has a set height. For example, Small is 10cm, Medium is 20cm and Large is 30cm. This article uses centimetres. For each size, you can set these parameters: The height The minimum number of characters The maximum number of characters on each line The number of lines of text that the size allows In the legacy model, the app scales each size so that its tallest line has the height you set. A single-line sign has one line, so that line is the tallest line. Illustration: one line with a height of 50cm.
- Pricing - Fixed Height Model (Legacy)The Fixed Height model is a legacy pricing model. Sign Customiser does not offer it for new customisers. You cannot change an existing customiser to this model. A copy of a customiser on this model stays on this model. This article is for customisers that already use it. A customiser on this model shows the banner Action required: migrate this customiser to the Simple Letter model. The Customisers list shows a Migrate badge for it. For a new Neon Letter Signs, Channel Letter Signs or Wood Letter Signs customiser, use the Simple Letter model. On the Pricing step, choose Fixed height per size (badged Simple ). Stencils and Address Sign Numbers have only the Simple Letter model. For them, the create flow skips the Pricing step and sets fixed height sizing without showing that option. To move an old customiser, create a new customiser in the same way. Keep Include demo data on, which is the default. If you turn it off, open the Sizes page and set Size Strategy to Fixed Height - Width scales dynamically on each size. For more information, see Pricing - Simple Letter Model and Sizes – Simple Letter Model.

Go to the Webfont Generator tool from FontSquirrel. Select Upload Fonts. Choose the fonts that you want to make smaller. After the upload, each font shows its name, type, number of glyphs and size. Select the EXPERT... option. The tool shows more settings. Use these settings: Font Formats: TrueType. Sign Customiser accepts only files that end in.ttf. Select this option. Subsetting: Custom Subsetting... Character Type: Lowercase, Uppercase, Numbers, Punctuation. Look at the Subset Preview row. It lists the characters that the subset includes. Include each character that your customers can type. Examples are accents, currency symbols, other symbols and characters from other writing systems. Sign Customiser does not add a missing character to a font file. On an Advanced Letter customiser, a missing character blocks add to cart by default. Use the Subset Preview row to check the characters in the subset before you download the fonts. For more detail, see Why is add to cart blocked for some font characters? Accept the Agreement. Download your font files. Extract the downloaded files. Find your optimised.ttf font file. Check the file size in your file manager. The file must be 2 MB or less. Open Sign Customiser. - Duplicating a customiserCopy a customiser in your current Store. The copy is a separate customiser that appears at the top of the Customisers list.
- Link Base Price To Size Instead Of FontWhen a sign has two or more fonts, the price of each font is added to the sign price. On Simple Letter customisers, this is the base price of each font. On Advanced Letter customisers, this is the start price of each font. The total price can be higher than you want. You can link this price to the sign size instead of to each font. Note: Use this setting only for signs that have more than one font. The steps are different for Simple Letter customisers and Advanced Letter customisers.

- Admin measurement unitsDisplaying the measurement units in the admin of Sign Customiser
- Font min heights and rounding measurementsThis article applies to Advanced Model customisers only If you have the setting "No decimal" enabled for your customiser: while also having fonts with minimum heights set to decimal values you will encounter this warning: The "No decimal" setting tells our system to round any measurements that are displayed on your Customiser, meaning if we calculate that your sign height should be "10.30cm" we will round it down to "10cm" and display that to the customer. We then need to validate that 10cm value against your font min height of 10.16cm, causing a validation issue. For this reason merchants using the "No decimal" setting are advised to set their font min heights to whole values.
- How to disable Cloudflare Proxy for Sign CustomiserCloudflare security features can block the connection when you connect Sign Customiser to your website. These features protect your site from automated requests. Sign Customiser sends its requests to your site automatically from its servers, so Cloudflare can treat them as automated requests. Make a rule that tells Cloudflare to let Sign Customiser through. The rule changes the checks only for requests that have SignCustomiser in the user agent. Any client can send this text, so the rule lowers protection for those requests.
- How do I set a password if I signed up with Google? You can sign in to the Sign Customiser Universal admin at web.signcustomiser.com with Google, or with your email address and password. If you created your account with Google, you can add a password to the same account. Google sign-in continues to work afterwards.
- Why is add to cart blocked for some font characters?A font can only draw the characters in its font file. A customer can type a character that the selected font cannot produce. What happens then depends on the pricing model: Advanced Letter blocks the design by default. Simple Letter and Frame Fit customisers (but not Lightbox) allow the design by default. The order is not marked. Fixed Height customisers always block the design. On a Lightbox customiser, unsupported characters in the text that a customer types always block add to cart. This depends on the font. A backtick, an accented letter, or a symbol can work in one font and be missing from another font.
Marketing
- Tracking events for ad conversionsA custom JavaScript event fires after a form submission or a successful Shopify cart addition. Use these events for ad tracking, CRM data, or storefront scripts. This article also shows how to save a ShareLink with a cart. Starter, Standard, and Pro plan families, including their yearly variants, do not receive the tracking events in the List of events section. One exception applies: a Shopify iframe embed can still send add-to-cart events. This restriction does not apply to ShareLink events. ShareLinks need a plan that includes sharing. Note: The form:submitted webhook was deprecated on 24 August 2026. It continues to send the same payload on every submission. There is no cut-off date. For a new integration, read submissions from the quotes API. The API also returns submission history.
- Send Google Ads click IDs to your CRMSign Customiser stores the Google Ads click IDs (gclid, gbraid, wbraid) of each form submission. Read them from the quotes API, a webhook, merchant emails or JavaScript events, then report offline conversions back to Google Ads.
