Why is add to cart blocked for some font characters?
Last updated:
A font can only draw the characters included in its font file. If a customer types a character that the selected font cannot produce, Sign Customiser blocks the design or warns you before production.
This depends on the font. A backtick, accented letter, symbol, or character from another writing system may work in one font and be missing from another. There is no single list of characters that every font must support.
Why add to cart is blocked
When the customiser detects that the selected font has no usable outline for a character, the customer sees the affected character and cannot add the design to cart while protection is on.
This protection matters most for Advanced Letter customisers. Advanced Letter uses each character’s font outline to create production artwork and calculate dimensions. Some Advanced Letter pricing methods also use those outlines to calculate the price.
Without a usable outline, a character may be missing or replaced with a box. The price, dimensions, and production artwork may also be wrong.
Recommended fix
Ask the customer to remove or replace the character, or choose a font that supports it. You can also upload a compatible font.
Test uploaded fonts with the letters, punctuation, symbols, and writing systems your customers use. Sign Customiser does not add missing characters to a font file.
Allow the customer to order anyway
-
Open Sign Customiser and select Customisers.
-
Open the customiser you want to change.
-
Go to General Settings.
-
Under Order safeguards, select Allow unsupported font characters.
-
For an Advanced Letter customiser, read the warning and confirm that you will check every affected order.
-
Select Save.

Important
We do not recommend turning off this protection for Advanced Letter orders. Only enable the setting if you will check and correct the text, artwork, price, and dimensions before production.
How the setting works for each pricing model
-
Simple Letter and Frame Fit: unsupported characters are allowed by default. You can turn the setting off to block them.
-
Advanced Letter: unsupported characters are blocked by default. You must accept the production warning before you can allow them.
-
Legacy Fixed Height: unsupported characters remain blocked.
A design made entirely from unsupported characters is still blocked unless it contains a visible icon or uploaded graphic. This prevents a blank sign from being ordered.
Check affected orders before production
Orders placed with an unsupported font character are marked Production check required in the order details and merchant email. The warning identifies the product, character, font, and text row.
Compare the customer’s text with the preview and production artwork. Correct the artwork, price, and dimensions before sending the order to manufacture.
