Sign Customiser

Why Sign Customiser needs the Shopify Publications permission, how to approve it, and how it differs from the optional Markets access.

Last updated:

Sign Customiser needs the read_publications and write_publications access scopes in your Shopify store. Without write_publications, the app cannot publish the products for your signs. Without read_publications, the app cannot find the ID of your online store, unless that ID is already saved.

The app creates the product, then makes it available in your online store. Making it available needs access to your publications.

If your store does not have this access, Shopify asks you to approve it the next time you open the app.

How to accept the new permissions

  1. Log in to your Shopify admin.

  2. Open the app in your Shopify admin.

  3. When Shopify asks you to approve updated access, accept the new permissions.

What are the new permissions?

The permissions are read_publications and write_publications. Sign Customiser uses write_publications when a shopper adds a custom sign to the cart. It uses read_publications when it must find the ID of your online store, and to list your publications in the integration settings. The app keeps that ID for a short time.

  1. The app creates the product in your store.

  2. The app finds the ID of your online store, if it does not have the ID already.

  3. The app publishes the product to your online store.

If your store does not give write_publications, the app cannot publish the product. If your store does not give read_publications, the app cannot publish the product unless it already has the ID of your online store.

How to check for failed publishing

Sign Customiser records failed requests in the Activity Logs section of the integration page. To read it, do these steps:

  1. In your Shopify admin, open the app.

  2. On the home page, select Tools & Settings, then select Integrations and Webhooks.

  3. On the Shopify card, select View Details.

  4. Scroll to the Activity Logs section.

The filter shows All Logs by default. Select Errors Only to see requests that returned an HTTP 4xx or 5xx status. Shopify can report a failed publish inside an HTTP 200 response, so also check All Logs.

For the meaning of common entries and status codes, see Understanding your integration Activity Log (errors explained).

Not the same as Markets access. Some stores that use Shopify Markets see a separate Approve Shopify Markets access recommendation in the app in your Shopify admin. It appears only when your Shopify Markets change prices by a percentage. If you approve it, the customiser can show those prices. It can also publish generated products to the active market of the shopper. This access is optional. It is not the publications access above. If you skip it, product creation still works.
